Recovery: Bakersfield Police Department California

Bakersfield, CA — A stolen 2025 Nissan Altima was safely recovered after Bakersfield Police Department officers used LoJack® GPS tracking technology to monitor the vehicle in real time following a dangerous high-speed pursuit.

The Nissan Altima had recently been stolen from a shopping center parking lot in Madera, California. The owner, who had purchased the vehicle only one month earlier, reported the theft and was protected by a LoJack GPS system installed on the vehicle.

On May 15, 2026, Bakersfield Police Department officers received an alert that the stolen Nissan Altima had been located near the Beachwood Apartments in the area of White Lane and Stine Road. Using the LoJack Law Enforcement (LE) App, detectives established rolling surveillance while coordinating responding patrol units.

As officers attempted an enforcement stop, the suspect fled onto northbound State Route 99, initiating a vehicle pursuit. During the pursuit, the suspect drove recklessly, reaching speeds exceeding 100 MPH on the freeway and more than 70 MPH on city streets, creating a serious risk to public safety.

Due to the dangerous driving behavior, officers made the decision to discontinue the active pursuit in the interest of officer and community safety. However, unlike traditional vehicle pursuits where visual contact is often lost once units disengage, LoJack LE technology allowed officers to continue monitoring the stolen vehicle’s live GPS location in real time without maintaining direct pursuit.

Just minutes later, Bakersfield Police Department officers located the stolen Nissan Altima abandoned nearby using LoJack GPS tracking data. Marked and unmarked patrol units saturated the surrounding area in an effort to locate the suspect, who was not immediately apprehended. The vehicle was recovered undamaged and processed for fingerprints as part of the ongoing investigation.

“This incident demonstrates the critical public safety advantages of real-time GPS vehicle tracking technology,” said a spokesperson familiar with the recovery. “LoJack LE allowed officers to safely disengage from a dangerous pursuit while still maintaining awareness of the vehicle’s location, ultimately leading to a successful recovery without further risk to the community.”

Vehicle pursuits remain one of the highest-risk situations facing law enforcement agencies nationwide. Technologies like LoJack LE help reduce pursuit-related dangers by giving officers the ability to track stolen vehicles remotely while improving recovery outcomes and minimizing unnecessary risk to officers and the public.
